We live in a world where it is possible for different kinds of truths to tolerate one another and coexist peacefully. The fact that many truths are coexisting together has created a way of life where people live by different kinds of truths and still call them “truth.” Over time, that has also manifested itself within the setting of the church. …Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)
Contrary to what Jesus said here, when I live a life of my own truth as a believer, I am creating a version of Jesus that suits my way of life and still call myself a follower of Him. But the truth is whatever the world’s version of truth may be, for us believers there is only one truth, and that is Jesus Christ, upon whom our salvation is founded. If there could exist another truth besides Jesus Himself, He would have called Himself “a truth” and not “the truth.” Truth is God’s standard for life, through which He transforms us into the likeness of His Son. Being okay with living a life that is not aligned with this truth is a dangerous place to be in the spiritual realm because it leaves us vulnerable to the deception of the enemy.
In Ephesians 6, where it talks about spiritual warfare, one of the pieces of armor used to stand against the enemy’s deception is the belt of truth girded around our waist. There is a sense of security that comes with wearing a well-fitting belt, it gives us confidence that our outfit will hold together for the rest of the day without needing constant adjustment. The same is true of having the truth of Jesus Christ wrapped around us; it reminds us of the secured eternity we have. Through this truth we process our life experiences, constantly measuring our way of life against Christlikeness and spiritual growth.
